Why Livelihood?

A secure livelihood is the foundation of a dignified life. Yet, many families in rural and tribal areas face uncertainty, low income, and seasonal unemployment. Without stable work, they struggle to access education, healthcare, and even basic needs. At Sarala Foundation, we believe that sustainable livelihoods empower individuals to break the cycle of poverty, become self-reliant, and provide a better future for their families.

What We Do

We support individuals—especially women and youth—in developing income-generating skills and finding long-term employment opportunities. Our programs include vocational training, small business support, access to financial services, and links to local markets. We also work with artisans and farmers to help them improve their practices, connect with buyers, and earn a fair wage. Our aim is not just to provide a source of income, but to build confidence and long-term resilience.

Our Interventions

We offer hands-on training in areas like tailoring, handicrafts, farming, poultry rearing, food processing, and more—based on the local context and market demand. We help individuals set up micro-enterprises by guiding them through product development, pricing, packaging, and promotion. In addition, we assist with creating savings groups, accessing government schemes, and linking them with micro-finance institutions to support business growth.

Impact

Dozens of individuals have been trained and are now earning a steady income through self-employment and small-scale businesses. Many families who once depended solely on seasonal labor now have multiple sources of income. With increased financial stability, families are able to send their children to school, invest in better nutrition, and plan for a brighter future. Our programs have also encouraged local entrepreneurship and community collaboration, promoting a culture of support and growth.

Stories of Change

Ravi, a young man from a tribal village, was unemployed and struggling to support his family. After completing our food processing training and receiving support to start his own small unit, he now sells pickles and snacks in nearby markets and earns a stable monthly income.

Ravi’s Small Business Success

Lalitha learned tailoring through our livelihood training. What began as a learning journey has now turned into a home-based business. She now stitches clothes for her community and has also trained two other women, creating a ripple of change.
